One of the most direct ways to change a child’s trajectory is to sit down next to them and help them read.

myHometown connects volunteers with local schools across the Wasatch Front — Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Provo, Orem, Ogden, Layton, and Santaquin — to provide one-on-one and small group tutoring support. No teaching degree required. No special training necessary. Just a willingness to show up consistently for a child who needs it.

Volunteers also help assemble reading kits — hands-on materials that go home with students to support literacy practice outside the classroom. It’s quiet, satisfying work that puts real resources in the hands of families who need them.

Scheduling is flexible and coordinated directly between volunteers and their assigned school. Whether you have one hour a week or several, there is a meaningful role for you.

myHometown hosts neighborhood Days of Service every Saturday across the Wasatch Front. Registration is through JustServe.org For school tutoring and reading kit inquiries, contact info@citiesstrong.org.
