Cities Strong Foundation FAQ

General Questions

What is Cities Strong Foundation?

Cities Strong Foundation is a Utah-based platform that brings together cities, nonprofits, faith communities, schools, businesses, and volunteers to strengthen neighborhoods through coordinated service.

We are not a direct-service charity. Instead, we provide the infrastructure, partnerships, and neighborhood-based model that helps local efforts go further.

Our work is grounded in the belief that service is the engine of upward mobility and that strong neighborhoods build strong cities.

Where does Cities Strong Foundation operate?

Cities Strong Foundation operates in select communities along the Wasatch Front in Utah. At this time, we are working in Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Ogden, Layton, Provo, Orem, and Santaquin, with the goal of continuing to expand into more Utah communities.

Our work is intentionally place-based. We partner closely with city leaders and local organizations to focus on real needs in real neighborhoods — not one-size-fits-all programs.

Each city partnership is built around long-term relationships and measurable impact.

What is the difference between Cities Strong Foundation and myHometown?

Cities Strong Foundation focuses on strengthening neighborhoods in specific ZIP codes by bringing people, resources, and partners together. We have our own board and make our own funding decisions.

myHometown is a separate organization and a key partner, running local neighborhood hubs that serve local Community Resource Centers (CRCs) with support from cities and faith groups. These centers bring services directly into neighborhoods and create easy ways for people to connect and help each other. While much of our current funding is connected to myHometown partnerships and local matches, we work to expand support—like housing, education, and legal services—around those hubs. Their strong volunteer network helps stretch every dollar, creating a much bigger impact for each community.

Is Cities Strong Foundation affiliated with a political or religious group?

No. Cities Strong Foundation is nonpartisan and interfaith.

We unite people across sectors, beliefs, and backgrounds around a shared goal: strengthening our communities. We work with civic leaders, nonprofits, faith groups, businesses, and residents who want to build thriving neighborhoods together.

No special skills are required.

Many projects are family-friendly and accessible to individuals, youth groups, businesses, and faith communities. If you have specialized skills, we can also help connect you to opportunities where those talents make a difference. See our Volunteer page for more details.

How often do volunteer opportunities happen?

Opportunities vary by city and season, but most partner cities offer consistent neighborhood-based service experiences year-round.

Our model is designed to create ongoing engagement — not just one-time events — so relationships and impact can grow over time. See our Volunteer page for more details.

Can businesses or organizations get involved?

Absolutely.

Cities Strong Foundation works with companies, schools, faith communities, and nonprofits in Utah that want to invest in local impact. We help coordinate meaningful service experiences that strengthen employee engagement, community relationships, and measurable outcomes.

We believe coordination and collaboration multiply impact.

Impact & Model

What makes the Cities Strong Foundation model different?

Most nonprofits focus on delivering one specific service. Cities Strong Foundation focuses on strengthening the system that makes all services more effective.

Our model is:

  • Place-based – tailored to specific cities and neighborhoods
  • Collaborative – cross-sector and interfaith
  • Data-informed – aligned with real indicators of need and upward mobility
  • Joy-centered – designed to make service welcoming and repeatable

We believe joyful service creates lasting participation.

What kind of impact does Cities Strong Foundation create?

Because we focus on infrastructure, our impact multiplies through every partner and every neighborhood we serve. Our impact includes:

  • Increased volunteer participation
  • Stronger collaboration across city sectors
  • Expanded access to neighborhood-based resources
  • Improved coordination among local service providers
  • Long-term community resilience

How does Cities Strong Foundation measure success?

Our goal is not just activity — it’s sustained, place-based progress. We measure:

  • Volunteer activation and retention
  • Cross-sector partnerships formed
  • Neighborhood engagement levels
  • City-level collaboration outcomes
  • Long-term sustainability of local initiatives

Partnerships & Cities

How does a city become a Cities Strong Foundation partner?

We focus on long-term partnerships, not short-term campaigns. Cities enter into a partnership through a structured engagement process that includes:

  • Alignment with city leadership
  • Community needs assessment
  • Cross-sector relationship building
  • Launch of neighborhood-based service infrastructure

Can Cities Strong Foundation expand to new cities?

Yes — thoughtfully.

We expand through invitation and readiness. Because our work is relationship-driven and place-based, we prioritize quality partnerships and sustainable implementation over rapid growth.

If you’re interested in exploring a partnership, we’d love to connect.
